Families United Action Network-FUAN was blessed to partner with Affordable Cleaning Services-ACS to walk in the Iowa Hawkeyes Homecoming Parade in Iowa City on October 19th, 2017.

The ACS team spent weeks sculpting their version of the legendary Herky as "Cleaning Herky" to go along with the parade theme of “Creating Legends,” and constructing a miniature house complete with bubbles drifting from the chimney for their entry: ACS - Affordable Cleaning Services and the Iowa Hawkeyes Cleaning Up Homecoming.

FUAN participants joined the team to walk in the parade as a show of support towards increasing awareness of Family Law Reform.

There were many obstacles at the time of the parade.

Bad weather had already cut the crowd and parade participants to a fraction of what was anticipated. Rain delayed the start and threatened to cancel the event altogether.

The float design sustained damage as the fall thunderstorms were relentlessly continuing. Despite the challenges, the parade eventually began shortly after dark as die-hard fans lined the streets.

Enthusiastic members of the ACS and FUAN family perservered, passing out candy and discount cleaning coupons, and greeting friends as they made their way along the crowd-lined streets.

ACS is serving their sixth year of commercial and residential cleaning services to the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids areas. The float design prepared by ACS-Affordable Cleaning Services included a paper-mâché Herky the Hawk, a miniature house with a bubble machine spewing bubbles from the chimney, Iowa Hawkeye and FUAN flags at full mast along with other “clean/family/Hawkeyes” imagery, and of course the ACS "Stay Clean My Friends" mascot, Chris Swiser.

Participants of the FUAN family and ACS team accompanied the float on foot generating excitement as they greeted the crowd while their playlist of songs referencing both cleaning and family values played in the background.

It was a great opportunity to reach members of the community with the FUAN message and increase our visibility. The team bonding was an excellent experience for both FUAN members and ACS staff. As a family-owned business dedicated to making life easier for families, the two groups fit together like a hand and glove.

Several participants of Families United Action Network joined the ACS team for a tailgaters’ brunch the next day before going to the Iowa homecoming game. It was a blustery day with temperatures fluctuating, but the group persevered as did the Hawks with a 45 to 16 win against Illinois. After the game, the party continued with a celebration at a local bar and grill.

Families United Action Network-FUAN is deeply entrenched in actively trying to improve the community through carrying out their mission statement.

“To preserve and protect children & families through repairing and rebuilding current structures & organizations, to create a solid foundation for Iowa's Families now and for the next generations.”

While ACS takes a different approach trying to “clean up the community” by helping to make the quality and environment of life easier for their clients and employees. Ironically, the award was "Best of Community," which is a very encouraging statement to both organizations’ work.

It Is an honor to win the game and is always an honor to serve the community... as a business and as families together. The work these two organizations are doing is undoubtedly “creating legends.”
