FUAN November 2020 Advocate of the Month

FUANAdvocate of the Month, News & Events, News You Can Use

We congratulate George on being chosen FUAN Advocate of the Month and for all his work in the Shared Parenting arena. George Rerat is a lifelong resident of Minnesota. He attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, graduating from St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is a self-employed consultant working in process improvement.

George lives in Edina and is the proud father of 3 children. After being married for 15 years and involved in each child’s life from birth: baptism, doctor appointments, Sunday school, sports, and school, George was shocked to learn that most divorced fathers he knew were not every other weekend Dads by choice. They were relegated to visitors in their children’s life by a statute in Minnesota law that gives each parent a rebuttable presumption of 25% parenting time. They must then fight for any time above 25%.

George loves spending time with his children, walking his dog, enjoys every season and outdoor activity that Minnesota has to offer. He lived in uncertainty for too long while battling for additional custody time. He did finally receive 50/50 parenting time, which he considers to be one of his greatest accomplishments. The experience was so terrible and took so long that George committed to helping others understand what was in front of them when they divorced “with children.”

It is because of this that George, along with five other parents, formed the Minnesota Shared Parenting Action Group about two years ago. This group is on a mission to move Minnesota Family Law to a place where Equal Shared Parenting is the starting point. Family Courts would value mothers and fathers equally and only depart from this arrangement if there was a need indicated by the children’s best interest standards.

“If there is to be a fight in Family Court, it should be to move away from equality, not to move towards it.”

– George Rerat

The Minnesota Shared Parenting Action Group has grown tremendously in the last two years. The group works hard in collaboration with Molly Olson and the Center for Parental Responsibility to bring bills, testimony, and education to the Lawmakers at the capital in Saint Paul. George is a FUAN Family Participant and one of the respected leaders of our allied groups.

George believes that children should not separate from their parents even when parents separate from each other. His philosophy is: Love your children more than you hate your ex.
