Bethany Steichen is the July 2018 FUAN Advocate of the Month.
Bethany Steichen was chosen for her work in Medical Choice Awareness which goes hand in hand with Family Law Reform and a parent's right to choose what is best for their children.
Bethany was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She has always been an advocate for people who don't have much of a voice of their own. When she was attending middle school, she wrote an editorial for the local newspaper trying to save a meal center for the homeless when the city wanted it gone.
Bethany's desire to fight for injustice for others increased as she got older. At 19, she had a baby boy and named him Chase. When Chase was 2 months old, he received a vaccination that changed both of their lives forever. He had a horrific reaction to the injection. Bethany and Chases' Doctors are still discovering lasting side effects 6 years later.
Bethany thought vaccines were the right thing to do, so she was confused when her baby had such an adverse reaction to them. She delved into research, learning of the considerable controversy over vaccinations. She was surprised to find out that there are even laws that attempt to deny parents the right to decide to have their children vaccinated or not.
Knowing what happened to her son, she was devastated thinking children could be further injured by being forced to have immunizations.
Consequently, in early 2013, Bethany decided to start standing up for parental choice in vaccination and medical decisions in general and continued what seems like, non-stop research on both sides of the issue. As of August 2017, she has been volunteering with Informed Choice Iowa that focuses solely on making sure parents know that they have a choice and making sure it stays that way.
Bethany says she would never expect a parent to go the route she has with her son, but she would like to make sure that all parents have the choice to make an informed decision for their family.
Congratulations, Bethany Steichen, on being selected as the July 2018 FUAN Advocate of the Month!
