Congratulations to Zachary Martin – The August 2018 FUAN Advocate of the Month.
Zachary was chosen to be the August 2018 FUAN Advocate of the Month due to his marketing and fundraising talents he has so kindly shared within the movement. At the beginning of August, he hosted an event, “Kids Deserve Dads Inaugural Banquet,” that raised over $24,000 for Family Law Reform to help locally in his area of Wyoming and to assist nationally. His talents, skills, and networking have shown to be an invaluable asset to the progress of our movement. Congratulations and thank you for your leadership!
Elijah Zachary Martin is the father of an amazing 18-month old little boy who is the apple of his eye. He has worked as a realtor for nearly 14 years and has been a broker/owner of a real estate firm, Platinum Real Estate, since 2015. The mother of Zach’s child wanted to date other people and decided last July that he only needed 10 hours every 2 weeks parenting time.
Since then he has been in the fight of his life. He is 38 and wants nothing more than to be a father and to spend every day for 6 months with his son. He is crushed to have that time cut so. He has asked how this could happen. He believed that he was a decent man, business owner and member of society and would get equal shared parenting time because it was what he believed to be the best. Zach found out, and all of you know, that this is not what happened.
Zach was dismayed and frustrated and decided that he had to make a change. His lawyer told him that he would be able to get more time if he was willing to fight and continue to go to court, but that shared parenting would never happen because the law of Wyoming said only sole custody is favored by the state. His lawyer, also a House Representative, began working on a bill with Zach to make shared custody on equal footing with sole custody.
In November of 2017, he founded the nonprofit Kids Deserve Dads, a shared parenting nonprofit working to give kids access to both parents and helping to provide services to help kids have both parents active in their lives. He became a lobbyist and worked the legislative floors to help inform lawmakers on what this change will do and why it is essential to pass it. In the end, the governor signed the bill into law and his son Elijah was present with his lobbyist badge, and the governor gave Elijah the pen he used to sign the bill.
Since the bill was passed, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the new bill and solidified that this law would last. Coming out of this decision, Zach knew he needed to push the nonprofit into the public eye and went on a campaign to bring attention and money to Kids Deserve Dads. On August 4th Wyoming had a full house for their inaugural banquet with nearly 260 guests and raised almost $24K for the nonprofit to serve the public.
Based in Cheyenne, WY, they are working with CASA to provide services for noncustodial parents to get their rights to children taken by the state. Soon Kids Deserve Dads will have a short-term housing project to help men leaving bad relationships with rent assistance and adequate housing so that when they have the initial court date they have enough beds for the kids and the kids and dads won’t have to go without overnights.
Zach is working with a few legislators who are not up for re-election to have a presumptive shared parenting bill up for a vote in 2019.
There is strong support and movement around the state. He is bringing a published doctor to sign books and travel the state to educate judges, lawyers, and the public on the benefits of shared parenting and to get support to push the representatives to make the right choice and pass the law for presumptive shared parenting.
