In it's simplest definition, parental alienation occurs when one parent engages in alienating behaviors to damage or destroy a child's relationship with their other parent. To be clear, parental alienation is a layperson term for what is an actual form of child psychological abuse. As is the case with any psychological abuse, parental alienation results in serious trauma to the victims who, in these cases, are innocent children who simply have the natural desire to have loving relationships with both of their fit parents.

Children abused with parental alienation often suffer from depression, anxiety, eating disorders, emotional issues, serious physical ailments, self-harm behaviors, and suicidal thoughts. As long as the abuse continues, the damage to the victim continues.

The abuse often continues into adulthood so it's important to state that an alienated child can be any age, even an adult child. This form of abuse is an epidemic and therefore is an urgent global health crisis. Parental Alienation is usually a “hidden abuse” and is often perpetrated covertly with great skills of manipulation used on outsiders-looking-in as well as the victims.

Events such as Parental Alienation Awareness Day are of utmost importance. The various Parental Alienation Awareness Day events around the world serve to create awareness and education not only for the general public but also for professionals who serve families in various capacities where parental alienation can be detectable if those professionals understand and know the signs of this vicious abuse.

It's imperative that professionals such as counselors, therapists, social workers, clergy, teachers, and all school administrators become educated about parental alienation. Not all, but some families dealing with parental alienation find themselves involved in family court litigation so it's critical that all judges and others associated with the workings of family courts have a thorough education and understanding of parental alienation.

Parental Alienation Awareness Day was conceptualized and created by Sarvy Emo. Sarvy was determined to find a way to create awareness about parental alienation in a way that would capture the interest of the public at large. With the support of Dr. Richard Warshak, the first Parental Alienation Awareness Day was held in April 2006.

From the start, Parental Alienation Awareness Day captured global participation and interest. People were encouraged to host their own events around the world and every year more events were held. To date, Parental Alienation Awareness Day events have been held in Belgium, Brazil, Ireland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, Lithuania, Finland, Tunisia, Bulgaria, Costa Rica, South Africa, Germany, Poland, many Canadian cities and many states in the United States just to name a few. Yes, this is only a partial list.

Many people who host a Parental Alienation Awareness Day event like Iowa’s Families United Action Network (FUAN) get Parental Alienation Awareness Day proclamations from their cities and/or states, and acknowledgments from their legislators, thus showing that their community supports the fact that children need to be able to freely love and have relationships with both of their parents and both sides of the families.

For example, to date, hundreds of mayoral proclamations have been made in Texas proclaiming April 25th “Parental Alienation Awareness Day.”

In 2010, Sarvy added “Bubbles of Love” to the Parental Alienation Awareness Day tradition, encouraging people to blow “bubbles of love” around the world to signify that “Just as bubbles can't be contained, nor should a child's love for both parents.”

Adding Bubbles of Love to Parental Alienation Awareness Day events makes the events even more family-friendly and approachable which is incredibly important to creating the most awareness possible. Since its inception in 2006, many parental alienation experts have actively supported and participated in Parental Alienation Awareness Day events.

For example, Dr. Richard Warshak made educational, encouraging and empowering speeches at the Dallas/Fort Worth Texas Parental Alienation Awareness Day/Bubbles of Love Day events in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
