Congratulations to Matt Hale for being named FUAN April Advocate of the Month. He was born in Indiana to parents from rural Kentucky. He has a BS in Marketing from Bradley University and an MBA from Louisville and is a Manufacturer’s Representative. Matt is widely considered to be one of the national leaders of the Shared Parenting movement. As a child, he grew up with a single parent, so he is sympathetic to the challenges facing those families. As an adult, he has seen a better path, Shared Parenting. He is the proud father of two biological daughters, one adopted daughter and two step-sons, all of whom have been raised in Shared Parenting arrangements.
Matt joined the National Parents Organization in 2012 but failed for many years in his joint custody efforts. Eventually, he had a major breakthrough by enrolling Dr. Ryan Schroeder, University of Louisville Sociology Chair, into the Shared Parenting movement. In 2017, Matt, joined by Ryan, lead Kentucky’s successful effort for the unanimous passage of the nation’s second Shared Parenting presumption law for temporary orders.
The law proved to be well-received, so he drafted a permanent order Shared Parenting bill in May 2017. This was a monumental undertaking since no state had ever passed a permanent order Shared Parenting law. Matt’s efforts, combined with Ryan and the amazing supporters he nicknamed the “Kentucky Heroes,” led to the nearly unanimous passage of 2018’s HB 528.
“Now we've arrived at the Glorious Park of shared parenting where parents take turns pushing their kids on swings.”-Matt Hale
Matt’s next efforts were to show how popular the law, which was confirmed through polling, actually was. Then, he researched and publicized how every sponsor won reelection, and the other supporting lawmakers were helped as well. Finally, he highlighted and wrote extensively about an official Kentucky Administrative Kentucky Office of the Court’s report that showed the Shared Parenting laws directly coincided with a decline in contested divorces and domestic violence family court cases.
Now, Matt is working toward helping other states pass Shared Parenting laws like Kentucky’s. For instance, he has testified in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Matt also regularly publishes guest columns in many states such as last month’s guest column in a Newton, Iowa newspaper. Matt looks forward to the day when every state joins Kentucky, and now Arkansas, in the Glorious Park of Shared Parenting.
In addition to all of this, Matt is a FUAN Family Participant and a member of one of our Affiliated Allied Organizations. He is being recognized at Kentucky’s Shared Parenting Day by Governor Andy Beshear and is a big fan of the Louisville Cardinals and Martin Luther King. Ironically, Matt also celebrates his birthday in April. We wish him a very happy birthday and congratulate him for being named Advocate of the Month!
Congratulations to Matt for being named FUAN April 2021 Advocate of the Month!
